Sharks, The Bahamas, Akshay Kumar and Rs 100 crore (or more) were no match for an itsy bitsy teenie weeny reason to watch Blue. Lara in bikini smouldered on screen. In perhaps the best shape of her career, the former Miss Universe stole the thunder from Bollywood’s a two-piece than she got in the swimwear round of the Miss Universe contest in 2000. The underwater adventure film might not have left a lasting impression, but Lara certainly did.

“When I agreed to be in the film, the last thing on my mind was how many people are going to watch it because I am in a swimsuit. Only when I got to the Bahamas did I realise that nothing must jiggle,” says Lara, as her trademark throaty laugh escapes. “I just wanted to be super-fit.” And she achieved this with diligence, hard work and facing fear in the face. In spite of hydrophobia, which she developed after nearly drowning at the age of 15, encouraged by her co-star Kumar, Lara grit her teeth and took swimming and scuba lessons. In the six moths preceding shooting, she learnt to swim, scuba dive, and overcame her fear of water. “Learning to dive has been one of my biggest achievements,” she says. She was so comfortable in the water that her body double “sat on the boat, sunbathed and got paid for it”. Swimming for four hours a day, weight training and yoga provided the potent combination that contributed to her gorgeous look.

Performing and hosting, going in front of an audience is always an exhilarating experience and it is platforms and avenues like this that drive me,” she emphasises. “And Riteish, Boman and I work extremely hard on the script. It goes through 15 drafts before we perform it on stage. While we folllow a script, some of the gags and twists are very spontaneous. We share a great chemistry and it all boils down to a great mix of experience, entertainment and glamour.”
