laraLara Dutta who turned 35 in April, has always been a fitness enthusiast and a yoga practioner for around 12 years now. She not only won the Miss Universe title in 2000, but also bagged the highest points in the swimsuit round for her fit body. She has managed to maintain her awesome figure even after giving birth to a baby girl. Throughout her pregnancy, Lara kept her cool and tried to keep as fit as possible and she was back in shape in a short time post her pregnancy.

Keeping fit during pregnancy.

Lara did not stop exercising even during her pregnancy but she modified her workouts to suit different stages of her pregnancy. She is a firm believer of yoga and admits that is the best thing that’s happened to her as it provides holistic wellness. According to her, practising yoga during her pregnancy helped her in a quick recovery post delivery.

She got back to doing moderate amounts of workouts after eight weeks post the delivery and resumed her regular exercise regimen after three months. Though working out is essential, she did not want to spend too much time in the gym and miss out on bonding with her baby girl. She even launched her own fitness DVD called H.E.A.L which stands for health, exercise and longevity. With inputs from her long-time yoga instructor Tonia Clarke who is a certified prenatal yoga teacher, Lara demonstrates various asanas to have a smooth pregnancy in the DVD. These include – utkatasana, veerabhadra, vrikshana, camel pose, sarvangna and pranayam among others.

While food is one thing that one needs to keep a tab on, Lara was in favour of giving in to one’s pregnancy cravings. She herself craved for mint milkshakes but she did not miss out on the essential vitamins and did not have any caffeine. She made it a habit to eat small but nutritious meals during the day to stay fit.

Her regular workout regimen.

Being a vegetarian, Lara makes it a point to eat enough raw fruits during the day and get her protein content from pulses and lentils. Drinking adequate amounts of water is also a must for her. She meditates and works out five days in a week. Her regimen consists a mix of yoga, cardio and strength training. Eating healthy and regular workouts are the secrets of her enviable figure even at 35.

IMG_0056Post-motherhood, Lara Dutta’s put The arc lights on hold and has now turned designer, launching an exclusive line of fusion saris.

When Asheeta of Chhabra 555 – a 60-year-old store in the heart of Delhi that has, for generations, catered to the whims  fancies of brides to be – first saw Bollywood beauty Lara Dutta she knew she had made the right choice in a future designer. Lara is after all an army kid, a Ghaziabad girl, who made it big with no help from anyone. And if this were not enough, she now only won a beauty title, but also settled into the role of a doting mother and supportive wife. The glamorous-cum-self-made image would connect with the upper middle-class audience Chhabra 555 was targeting.

“I have designed 47 saris and I worked on every piece. Every last minute detail, including how and where the bootis (motifs) should be placed, how the paisleys would look – in fact every design input was mine. They came back to me with final designs and of course the karigars (craftsmen) and production were taken care of by them,” says Lara.

The collection is divided into several parts – the first part have 12 designs and is executed in Benarasi (from Varanasi) work; then comes the Chikankari (special thread work from Lucknow) with gotta patti (gold or silver bands) or with a free flowing zari border. “There are some Bandhej (tie and dye) saris as well as basic georgettes which are simple and effective.

I like the half and half saris – velvet with Chantilly lace. It took almost four months to put this line together. And I wanted it to be affordable – so we kept the price points between Rs 13,000 to Rs 50,000,” she says.

Emboldened by the positive response, Lara is now coming up with a line of suits, in the prêt category. The line will also have a few saris. The idea is to give customers something celebratory without making it look over-the-top!
