The Singh Is Bliing actress also expressed her desire to formally train as a film director!

Now that Lara Dutta has made her comeback to films with Singh is Bliing, she is all set to revive her hitherto dormant production banner Bheegi Basanti Entertainment.

It’s been four years since she produced her first film, Chalo Dilli, starring her and Vinay Pathak. A sequel, Chalo China, was announced in March 2014, but there was no progress on that. Ask Lara about the delay and she says, “That film is locked and loaded. We have had some issues in the past, there have been blockages with the previous setup. Once we get past that, we will see.”

About why there hasn’t been any other film from her banner, she says, “I am not a huge production house like UTV or Eros with 15 directors on board. I want to make films that are high on content and not huge blockbusters. Such stories won’t come by everyday — it’s not like you go shopping and get it in the chana market (laughs). But now I have got two lovely scripts, and I will talk more about that when the time is right. You will see more of me (she has a small role in Fitoor and plays a lawyer in Azhar) and my production ventures next year,” she says enthusiastically. And, no, she won’t be acting in either of the two films that she is producing.

Besides returning to acting and producing, Lara is also planning to take up direction in the near future. She says, “I would love to direct, but technically I am not prepared for it. My energies are focussed on producing my two films. Mahesh and I have been thinking about me going back and studying direction and I want to do that.”

After marriage and motherhood, Lara Dutta has been away from the big screen for a while. she’s returning with a slew of exciting films, but refuses to term it a ‘comeback’. Lara talks to us about playing mommy to Saira, her daughter with Mahesh Bhupathi, and more.

Former Miss Universe and actress Lara Dutta has been away from the arclights for a while now, but she is returning to the big screen with three big projects — Fitoor, Azhar and Singh Is Bling. Admitting that she’s been happy playing mom to Saira, her daughter with tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi, Lara adds, “But now Saira’s grown up a bit and these interesting offers came up so I decided to get back. I have three drastically different roles in these films and now I intend to get back to the movies seriously.”

While she herself chose to take a break and focus on her family, Lara does not believe that there are fewer roles for married actresses in Bollywood. In fact, she feels that her possibilities have only increased after she tied the knot with Mahesh. “The world has changed now. Actresses who are married get tailor-made roles. And now I can also produce films. I have a nice husband with whose support I can indeed do so many things,” Lara says.

She admits that while her priorities have changed after marriage and motherhood, she doesn’t get a feeling of having “missed out” on anything. “I enjoy looking after my daughter. Mahesh was busy setting up his tennis league, but I’ve had great business support from him.”

From a newbie to the fashion industry to mentoring young models for the ongoing pageant Miss Diva 2015, Lara Dutta speaks of her journey.

Starting off her career as a newbie in the fashion industry, the tall and slender 16-year-old would sit in the back rows at fashion weeks, clutching on to her college text books, and observe the models as they walked the ramp, hoping one day she would make it there too. With hard work and perseverance, this studious-looking-teenager evolved into a beauty queen and won the title of Miss Universe in 2000.

“This wasn’t an easy ride, but I’ve had the good fortune of getting the right guidance,” says Lara Dutta, who is mentoring a group of models for Miss Diva 2015 beauty pageant. “My family realised that I had a calling for modeling much before I did. I won my first beauty contest when I was 16, and following that, I was lucky to get the right campaigns. Though the money wasn’t as much as it is now in the fashion industry, working at a young age gave me confidence. Now, I will be mentoring these young girls and hopefully do for them what others had done for me. It brings me great joy to see them succeed. Life has come a full circle,” says Lara.

She is a part of the selection panel for auditions of the pageant, which is being held across 10 cities in India. The Kolkata and Lucknow rounds are over and now the crew is travelling to Ahmedabad, Delhi, Bengaluru, Indore, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and Pune. The auditions in Pune will be held on August 30 and the final round of the pageant will take place in Mumbai for which the date will be announced later.

Former Miss Universe Lara Dutta feels that participants come “a little too prepared” for the beauty pageants nowadays. Lara, who is hosting and mentoring the participants for Miss Diva 2015 and Miss Diva Universe 2015, told PTI over e-mail, “I think girls today come a little too prepared and rehearsed having seen past pageants and contests.”

“One needs to constantly be in the process of discovering themselves right through the entire process rather than just focusing on the title and impressing someone else.”

The 37-year-old actress also feels that Bollywood should not be the ultimate goal for participating.

“Winning the title will give you the exposure and the access to Bollywood but that’s not why you participate and train. Winning an international title and being a representative for your country is a completely different endeavour that the girls need to focus on,” she said.

Asked about the difference between the national and global pageant, Lara said, “Yardstick is the same. Looks, an individual’s personality, grace and an original opinion. We’re looking for the whole package.”

Lara believes women have a stronger voice today as compared to past. “Women are now in a far stronger space from an expression point of view. Who they are is being showcased through their fashion. Also the growing economic independence has helped women explore what works for them and find their own fashion voice,” she said.
