As one of the stars of Mohammad Azharuddin’s upcoming biography Azhar, actor Lara Dutta has called the legendary Indian cricketer a phenomenal person. In the film, the Bollywood beauty plays a lawyer hell bent on proving the match-fixing allegations levelled against Azharuddin, who is played by Emraan Hashmi.

“He [Azharuddin] has lent tremendous support to the film and obviously, remained very involved,” said Lara, at an event that saw her present scholarships to 200 female students. “He is an incredible person. After working with him over this year, I have gotten to know him and he is quite a phenomenal person,” she added.

As the trailer of the film suggests, Azharuddin remains one of the most successful and controversial captains in Indian cricket, owing to his accomplishments on the field, personal relationships and match-fixing scandals. When asked if she anticipates any problems for Azhar from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) — the national governing body for the game — Lara replied in the negative. “The film-makers have done good research on it,” she said. “They have made the film with a lot of care and thought. It will have its own destiny and we will see what the destiny is when the film releases.”

Lara Dutta, who arrived to support the scholarship programme organised by Fair & Lovely Foundation, was all in for women empowerment. The actress felicitated the girls selected for the scholarship scheme.

At the do, Lara recollected her younger days as she spoke about women power. The actress who’s gearing up for her Bollywood release Azhar, spoke about her modeling days and mentioned how she never depended upon her parents to fund for her education.

She said, “I started my career when I was 16. My parents were very supportive of my career decision. The only thing that my mother was concerned about me was my studies. She wanted me to at least have a degree and wanted to see me graduated.”

She further added, “During my course of college, I did not burden my parents with fees. I mean, they were financially strong to support me but I just wanted to stand for myself.”

The actress who looked stunning in a pink gown also spoke about her upcoming film. She will be seen playing a lawyer in Azhar with Emraan Hashmi. When quizzed about the kissing sequences for which Emraan is famous, Lara laughingly said, “The story in the film did not allow for such scenes between us. Bass main bach gayi (laughs).”

Bollywood actor Lara Dutta Bhupathi is well known for her fitness regimen. Even after gaining so much of weight during her pregnancy, she managed to get back to her old sexy look within a short time. While she promotes fitness as a way of life, she does not think that she needs to guide her co-star Emraan Hashmi about it.

The actress, who is working for the first time with Emraan Hashmi in the film “Azhar”, told ANI, “Emraan is a fantastic actor, and of course, he had done a lot of homework on the character before coming on board. Also, it is a huge responsibility on him to enact Mohammad Azharuddin. He is brilliant in it and I don’t think I need to give any fitness tips to him, for sure. So far, the film is shaping up really great so I am very excited.”

She further said that it is fun to work in such a film because there are very few sport-based films in this country, and it is nice to be part of something that’s different from the regular commercial masala films that comes out every year.

Azhar is a film based on the real life events of the former Indian international cricketer, Mohammad Azharuddin. The film is directed by Tony D’Souza.

Of the many things that former Miss Universe Lara Dutta can do, few would have known that she has great comic timing. As the English translator Emily who is hired to facilitate better communication between Raftaar Singh (Akshay Kumar) and Sara (Amy Jackson) in Singh is Bliing, Dutta, 37, left audiences laughing in their seats with her vivacious performance. It was co-star and friend Akshay Kumar, who convinced her to return to the big screen after a break of two years, which were spent raising Saira, her daughter with husband, tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi.

With a three year-old child now in her life, Dutta says her priorities have changed. “I work lesser hours than I did before,” she says seated at a suite in the Westin Hotel in Goregaon in Mumbai. “I am selective about what I give my time to. If it is going to be time away from her, it has to be worth it.” Being the well-being advocate of Westin Hotels and Resorts is one such role that is worth it because it covers two aspects that Dutta has been passionate about- fitness and wellness. Yoga is a discipline that she swears by. Dutta was eight-and-a-half months pregnant when she produced a video in which she performed asanas and released the footage as a DVD titled PreNatal Yoga.

“It was a love affair that started 15 years ago because I found that yoga worked for me more mentally,” says Dutta, who took it up to nurse a knee injury. “I have cured my ailments several times purely by breathing exercises and no medication.” She is especially proud and happy of the fact that she introduced her husband to the many benefits of yoga. “He loves it now,” she says. “As an athlete, he has found that it helps him so much with injuries; strengthening the body and flexibility.”
