Of the many things that former Miss Universe Lara Dutta can do, few would have known that she has great comic timing. As the English translator Emily who is hired to facilitate better communication between Raftaar Singh (Akshay Kumar) and Sara (Amy Jackson) in Singh is Bliing, Dutta, 37, left audiences laughing in their seats with her vivacious performance. It was co-star and friend Akshay Kumar, who convinced her to return to the big screen after a break of two years, which were spent raising Saira, her daughter with husband, tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi.

With a three year-old child now in her life, Dutta says her priorities have changed. “I work lesser hours than I did before,” she says seated at a suite in the Westin Hotel in Goregaon in Mumbai. “I am selective about what I give my time to. If it is going to be time away from her, it has to be worth it.” Being the well-being advocate of Westin Hotels and Resorts is one such role that is worth it because it covers two aspects that Dutta has been passionate about- fitness and wellness. Yoga is a discipline that she swears by. Dutta was eight-and-a-half months pregnant when she produced a video in which she performed asanas and released the footage as a DVD titled PreNatal Yoga.

“It was a love affair that started 15 years ago because I found that yoga worked for me more mentally,” says Dutta, who took it up to nurse a knee injury. “I have cured my ailments several times purely by breathing exercises and no medication.” She is especially proud and happy of the fact that she introduced her husband to the many benefits of yoga. “He loves it now,” she says. “As an athlete, he has found that it helps him so much with injuries; strengthening the body and flexibility.”

In conversation with Lara Dutta on how to travel light (she’s talking about you & not your suitcase).

Beauty queen, mother and actor Lara Dutta has donned many hats in the past. In her most recent avatar, she’s pushing for health and well being as a supplement to travel.

You live a really active lifestyle, between work and family, there’s little time to do much else.  How do you manage to stay fit despite your busy schedule?
It really starts with loving yourself and having a positive approach. Whether you do an hour of yoga or sweat it out in the gym, you need to decide on a regimen that works for you and your lifestyle. I would just say- eat well, make sure you get your sleep, have an exercise regimen which is balanced and involves cardio as well as strength training and body conditioning. Above all, just have fun. Your fitness regimen should be fun for you, not a chore. I always keep myself well-hydrated, eat healthy and I find that makes a huge difference, wherever you are.

Lara Dutta, who returned to the silver screen with Akshay Kumar starrer “Singh is Bliing”, says she is enjoying every opportunity that is coming her way.

Actress Lara Dutta, who returned to the silver screen with Akshay Kumar starrer “Singh is Bliing”, says she is enjoying every opportunity that is coming her way.

“I am enjoying motherhood and I think I am a person who likes to take things gently. My daughter Saira is going to school now so now I have started work again. I am enjoying anything that comes to me,” Dutta said.

The actress spoke about babies and her personal experiences, while sharing a funny incident when her husband, tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi, had to change their daughter Saira’s diapers.

“It was an enjoyment to watch how Mahesh (Bhupathi) did that. I was away for an award event for the first time and when I came back, Mahesh was totally confused how to change the diapers for Saira. But with a little help he finally did it,” Lara quipped.

On the work front, Lara said she is “getting quite a few offers”.

“I enjoy doing comedy films and obviously after ‘Singh is Bliing’, I am getting quite a few offers. Right now, I am busy shooting ‘Azhar’ and ‘Fitoor’,” Lara shared.

The Singh Is Bliing actress also expressed her desire to formally train as a film director!

Now that Lara Dutta has made her comeback to films with Singh is Bliing, she is all set to revive her hitherto dormant production banner Bheegi Basanti Entertainment.

It’s been four years since she produced her first film, Chalo Dilli, starring her and Vinay Pathak. A sequel, Chalo China, was announced in March 2014, but there was no progress on that. Ask Lara about the delay and she says, “That film is locked and loaded. We have had some issues in the past, there have been blockages with the previous setup. Once we get past that, we will see.”

About why there hasn’t been any other film from her banner, she says, “I am not a huge production house like UTV or Eros with 15 directors on board. I want to make films that are high on content and not huge blockbusters. Such stories won’t come by everyday — it’s not like you go shopping and get it in the chana market (laughs). But now I have got two lovely scripts, and I will talk more about that when the time is right. You will see more of me (she has a small role in Fitoor and plays a lawyer in Azhar) and my production ventures next year,” she says enthusiastically. And, no, she won’t be acting in either of the two films that she is producing.

Besides returning to acting and producing, Lara is also planning to take up direction in the near future. She says, “I would love to direct, but technically I am not prepared for it. My energies are focussed on producing my two films. Mahesh and I have been thinking about me going back and studying direction and I want to do that.”

Lara Dutta thinks it is good to see challenging and exciting roles being offered to actresses today.

“I think it is far better today than in the past. I never went to producers saying I am back and ready to do work. I feel you are in a time when good female roles are (being) written. It is a blessing to have those roles being offered,” Lara told PTI. The 37-year-old actress reveals her upcoming film Singh is Bliing happened because her actor friend Akshay Kumar wanted her to be part of the film.

So was the case with Fitoor, where director Abhishek Kapoor was keen on having Lara on board for the film.

“Singh is Bliing happened because Akshay Kumar called me up for a role. Gattu (director Abhishek Kapoor) is an old friend and he approached me saying there is a role for me in Fitoor. It was ten days of work and I agreed to do it. Azhar happened out of the blue,” she said.

Asked about her roles in her upcoming films, Lara said, “In Singh is Bliing, the role of Emli is not the leading lady but it is one character that audience will not forget. The role in ‘Azhar’ is powerful and impactful.”

The former Miss Universe is glad that actresses today are ruling the roost.
