As a part of her prep, the actress even met her lawyer friend and observed her at work. Lara Dutta, who was last seen in Fitoor, returns to the screen now as Meera, a public prose cutor, in the Azhar biopic. The actress describes her latest screen avatar as a no-nonsense lawyer who fearlessly stands for the truth and is feared by her peers.

“It’s a challenging role and I had fun playing it because it’s a totally fiction al character but integral to the narrative,“ says Lara, who is Mohammad Azharuddin’s nemesis in the film as she fights the former Indian cricketer trying to prove that he’s guilty of match fixing.

As part of her prep, she spoke to a lawyer friend and observed her at work to understand the body language and the finer nuances of playing the part. Director Tony D’Souza insists that he thought Lara was apt for this role that demanded a strong, stern look and someone who could act well. “She went through all the legal documents pertaining to the case.We also had regular reading sessions. She really worked very hard for the role,“ says Tony, who saw a lot of the independent Meera in Lara herself. They shot most of her portions in Hyderabad and few scenes in London. Lara and Tony have known each other for years, having done Blue together earli er. “She instantly fell in love with the role. Lara in fact, was so much into the char acter that sometimes even off the camera she would speak the lawyer’s language,“ he laughs.

Bollywood actor Lara Dutta Bhupathi is well known for her fitness regimen. Even after gaining so much of weight during her pregnancy, she managed to get back to her old sexy look within a short time. While she promotes fitness as a way of life, she does not think that she needs to guide her co-star Emraan Hashmi about it.

The actress, who is working for the first time with Emraan Hashmi in the film “Azhar”, told ANI, “Emraan is a fantastic actor, and of course, he had done a lot of homework on the character before coming on board. Also, it is a huge responsibility on him to enact Mohammad Azharuddin. He is brilliant in it and I don’t think I need to give any fitness tips to him, for sure. So far, the film is shaping up really great so I am very excited.”

She further said that it is fun to work in such a film because there are very few sport-based films in this country, and it is nice to be part of something that’s different from the regular commercial masala films that comes out every year.

Azhar is a film based on the real life events of the former Indian international cricketer, Mohammad Azharuddin. The film is directed by Tony D’Souza.

Bollywood actress Lara Dutta believes that after a certain age, one gets free from the pressure of playing the lead in films. At such times, Lara says that all one needs to have is a break through character which brings the best out of an actor, irrespective of its shelf life on screen.

And such is a character the actress is playing in the upcoming film, ‘Azhar’. In an exclusive interview to ANI, Lara, who will portray the character role of a lawyer, threw some light on her role, “This character is of course inspired by Mohammad Azharuddin’s life, but there was no real reference to it. Of course, there was a prosecuting lawyer but it wasn’t a female. So, there is a certain amount of homework that has went into owning the character because she is a tough cookie, adamant, best in her business and a tough nut to crack. There was a certain approach to the character which was fun and nice as it is very different from any other characters I have done in my career including the role in ‘Singh is Bling'”

Lara was present at the launch of ZEVEN, which is a multi-dimensional brand committed to transform sports in India by making it an important part of everyone’s life.

The event also saw the presence of some Indian athletes like Shikhar Dhawan, Rohan Bopanna, Mary Kom and Mahesh Bhupathi.

Reviews about Lara’s performance:

Lara Dutta may be just an art dealer, and hence inconsequential to this story, but she gets to say what we have been dying to: “Itna aasan nahin hota yahaan tak aana. Joote ghis jaate hain.” Needless to say, don’t look down at theirs.

The biggest let down in the film is that good actors like Lara Dutta, Govind Namdev and Rahul Bhat have been wasted in small roles and only turn out as mere additions to the brigade of the cast.
While Tabu and to a far lesser extent, Lara Dutta , Aditi Rao Hydari and Rahul Bhatt (making an impact bigger than Aditya Kapoor in his brief cameo) and Akshay Oberoi (drawing a character out of a seriously malnourished role) speak their meagre dialogues with conviction, Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapoor struggle with their copiously florid lines trying to make sense of the bombast.
Ajay Devgn and Lara Dutta are totally wasted in the film.
Aditi Rao Hydari, Akshay Oberoi, Rahul Bhatt, Ajay Devgn and Lara Dutta have performed their parts well.
Lara Dutta is perfectly cast in her character of Leena.
Lara Dutta has a smooth cameo as Noor’s gallerist – but old-fashioned Bollywood misinformation about the way these things actually work catches up here too.
