The Yamaha Fascino Miss Diva Universe 2014 pageant gets more spectacular, more glamorous and a lot more competitive as it turns over a new leaf as a TV series.

The pageant will now be held as a docu-series, and this year, it will have nine nail-biting episodes, which will see 15 finalists give it their all. Each episode (to be aired on Zee Cafe), will see the girls prove their mettle on tasks set by celebrity judges, who will test them on different attributes. Full of twists and turns, surprise tasks and innovative challenges, every episode will end in elimination, with three divas being crowned in the finale. The pageant is no longer about beauty alone. It’s about a diva who has all the attributes to make her a complete winner. Once crowned, she will represent India at the Miss Universe pageant. The exciting new format also features a mentor, aptly christened ‘D’. Taking over the onus of guiding them and ensuring India makes a mark on the global platform is the charismatic Lara Dutta, who experienced the same journey before she was crowned Miss Universe 2000.

Lara says, “When Priyanka Chopra, Dia Mirza and I won titles in 2000, India was the pioneer in how a pageant should be conducted. With this new format, we want to replicate that international success. Having been a Miss Universe, I know that life and I’m excited to share it with the girls. The TV series gives the audience a chance to get to know the girls. The eliminations are heart-breaking, but we have to find a winner.”

Talking about the role of ‘D’, she says, “Any girl who has wanted to win a pageant has always looked up to past winners. Through all this, ‘D’ is going to be a mentor, friend, sister and someone who will find out if they have the requisite qualities to represent India internationally. The goal is to help them realise their strengths and to make this a platform where we encourage more talent to participate. If we are able to produce an international winner, it will be the icing on the cake.” Yamaha Fascino is the title sponsor of the pageant, which is styled by Myntra.com.

She has been away from the limelight for a while now. Yet when Lara Dutta turned up in the Capital for “Colgate Bring Smiles, Bright Futures” campaign, she was the cynosure of all eyes. For the past few years Lara has not been shooting for films, busy as she has been with domestic responsibilities. Now she is back producing and acting in a sequel to “Chalo Dilli”. The actor spoke about modelling, acting and biopics, etc.

Please shed light on the sequel to “Chalo Dilli”?
“Chalo China” is going to be a humorous film. Certainly not in the mould of Akshay Kumar starrer “Chandni Chowk to China” which focused on martial arts. I will leave direction to someone else and will only be acting in this venture, which is in post production stage.

As someone staunchly advocating equality, what is your view on female actors’ complaint that their remuneration is far less than their male counterparts?
Equal remuneration is the need of the hour. Cinema is a depiction of society and India is predominantly a male-dominated society. Film industry is no different. The fact is that Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan are bigger draws than Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif. However, this does not mean that talent of female actors is less than male actors. There should be parity.

Back in 2011 the film “Chalo Dilli” that featured Vinay Pathak and Lara Dutta was all set for a sequel titled “Chalo China”. Much like the first film, “Chalo China” would yet again be based on the journey of the lead actors towards their end goal.

Though the film that is set in India was initially expected to take off in April this year has been postponed. Apparently, the film which is expected to be shot across multiple locations across Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia and China, had to be postponed due to the restrictions after the Malaysian aircraft mishap that took place. Due to this delay, the film will not go on floor in January 2015. However, the makers of the film will first be doing a recce of the locations again before commencing the shoot.

“Chalo China” this will be directed by Shashank Ghosh and produced by Mahesh Bhupati’s banner Big Daddy Productions, Lara’s Bheegi Basanti Entertainment and Eros.

Once business was concluded, it was time to party, as the creme de la creme of Pune society jostled for some Trump-time at a city hotel. From the Poonawallas to the Bhosales, the American tycoon was surrounded by the city’s jet-setters, adorned in their classy best.

Resplendent in an ochre-coloured sari, actor Lara Dutta interviewed Trump and his son Donald Jr in a mini talk show held on the stage set up in the banquet hall. Meanwhile, an otherwise perfectly-coiffed Shobhaa De (accompanied by her youngest, Anindita), managed to trip over her sheer sari, only just managing to keep upright with the help of Natasha Poonawalla.

A self-confessed lover of attention, Trump had his pick of pretty young things, who Mirror observed falling all over themselves, clicking selfies with the business mogul.
